I am/was a resident of this facility

I\'ve lived here over a year. Constantly understaffed. Med techs and assistants are good. We have a new nurse for the facility as of a couple months ago. Previous nurse constantly was late with providing us with refills. Constantly late with refills leaving us residents to go without. I\'m not aware if that\'s been resolved. Some of the attendants are not qualified to do your personal laundry. They don\'t seem to mind if they ruin your clothing. The dining room again understaffed, service is slow. Over half the time you could wait 30-45 minutes do you have your order taken and then anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour before you receive your food. Half the time it\'s on the cool side. Heaven forbid if you wish to ask for anything in the meantime such as butter or additional condiments. Anything over my base needs such as recovering from surgeries are out of the question. They\'ll just leave you hanging. Even though ask for additional service before, after the surgery, then it\'s a big No. It\'s the management that provides less than quality service. Though everyone is friendly. It\'s odd.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

The Ridge Foothill is a very nice, high-end assisted living facility with excellent food and many activities, but the staff is not as responsive as they could be. They seem to be overworked. My mother often has to wait in the dining room for service and she sometimes has to wait for responses, but she's pretty happy there. She's in a studio. They offer 1-bedrooms, but there's a big waiting list for anything beyond the studio. They have book clubs, game nights, happy hour, clinical discussion group, German club, musical programs, art classes, and manicures and pedicures. They have an art room in a beautiful setting with mountain views, a workout room, and daily exercise classes. They do not have any nursing care, but companies come from the outside to do treatment, PT and OT.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My friend is in St. Joseph Senior Living Apartments. The manager is very accommodating. The maintenance and housekeeping is like a family affair, and they're all very nice. They have an alarm system included in the rent, and the cleaning service is very reasonable. They put new carpet in his apartment and it's very clean and very nice. The bathtub is very accommodating because it has a drop step in the middle of it, so he doesn't have to step over the bathtub to get into the shower. The people are very nice. There are a lot more women than men, but he's a priest and there's quite a few priests living there. They also have 11:30 mass every day for Catholic people. It's been a very positive experience except the food doesn't accommodate diabetic people. They have special events like a band come in, there's a library, exercise bicycle, and free washers and dryers. They have a kitchen in the unit, but he doesn't cook. You have to pay extra for the food. It's an excellent facility.

We chose St. Joseph Senior Living Apartments for my father because they were the most reasonably priced. Meals are included, but you can pay extra to get that done. Everything is a la carte that you add on, so the base rate is a lot less expensive. The staff is very friendly and helpful. He is participating in activities and hosting a lot. He seems to enjoy it there.

I visited this facility

It had excellent programs. I would give the amenities and spaces a 4/5. For independent living, it's a very good place. If it were appropriate for my father, it would have been a great choice, but he would need assisted living.

I visited this facility

I visited St. Joseph Senior Living Apartments. I just felt sorry for the poor guy who accommodated me because it was the weekend, and he was trying to be tour guide, repair man, and everything at the same time. I thought he was doing a good job while he was trying to be a jack of all trades. I had a good tour, although the apartments were a little small. There wasn't much going on while I was there since it was the weekend, so I only saw that they have TV in the community room. They also have books and puzzles available, just no planned activities that time. I saw the dining area right after lunch, it was clean, and seemed to serve its purpose. I really like that everyone has a pendant, so when they fall or something, all they have to do is press the button and somebody comes to help them.

I visited this facility

St. Joseph Senior Living Apartments was fine. A young man took us around, and it was fine. We chose not to move there because it is too far from our daughter and she was worried. The rooms were fine. They were what I would expect in a senior living environment. The staff was OK. There were obviously people there who were not happy, but there were also people there who were happy. It was an OK place.

I am a current client of this provider

Home Instead Senior Care provides me with home care for two hours a day twice a week. They also help me with my shopping and light housekeeping. The caregiver was very good and I'm really happy with her. They just need to stick with schedule and notify you when it gets changed, because they're not good about that. I told them they could come at 9:30 a.m., but my caregiver is coming at 10:30. My current worker is the fifth one I've had, but I'm so pleased with her and it's exciting that she keeps coming. It's nerve-wracking having new people again and again thinking they'd work out.

I visited this facility

St. Joseph Senior Living Apartments was very clean and pleasantly appointed. The one room I saw was very small. The staff forgot that I had an appointment because they were clueless when I came in the door, but they were friendly and invited me to have lunch. They were good about serving me and the people at my table. The food was OK.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Salt Lake City

Medicaid in Utah

The state of Utah offers financial assistance with the cost of living through its Aging Waiver. This waiver program is designed to help elderly individuals delay or avoid the need for nursing home care by providing a range of services that can help the recipient remain in their community. This waiver program is available to seniors residing in their own homes and to those in assisted living. Services offered under this program include senior companion services, specialized medical equipment, respite care, transportation, case management and assisted living or home care services.

To be eligible for this program, seniors must be 65 years of age and meet the financial requirements for Medicaid. As of 2019, individuals cannot have income above $12,490 per year ($16,910 for couples) or assets totalling $2,000 for individuals or $3,000 for couples. Applicants must also be assessed and require a nursing level of care. Seniors can apply for this waiver in person at the Division of Aging and Adult Services office or by calling (801) 538-3910.

Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living

New Choices Waiver Program

The New Choices Waiver assists seniors who are residing in a nursing facility and wish to move to an assisted living facility or return to their community. The program offers social and financial assistance as well as case management and transition counseling services. Its purpose is to reduce financial stress on the Medicaid system that’s the result of the high cost of nursing care.

To be eligible for this program, seniors must be residing in a nursing home and able to safely live in a facility that provides a lower level of care or within the community. To apply or to obtain more information about the waiver, seniors can contact 1-800-662-9651.

Optional State Supplement

Seniors who receive Supplemental Security Income can apply for Utah’s OSS, which is a cash benefit that’s meant to help seniors who are residing in long-term care facilities or receiving home care to pay for associated costs. The senior’s income determines OSS benefit amounts, and income limits change annually.

Seniors who are applying for OSS benefits must not possess assets valued higher than $2,000 ($3,000 for couples) and must meet the specified income limits. To apply, seniors can contact their local Social Security Administration Office or call 1-800-772-1213.

Elderlife Bridge Loan

In some cases, seniors may be ineligible for Medicaid but still require financial assistance with the cost of assisted living. Elderlife Financial Services provides elder bridge loans to support seniors who find themselves in such a situation. These loans are paid directly to the senior’s assisted living facility and can be repaid in installments.

Seniors must meet minimum credit and income eligibility requirements or have a cosigner who does. A single application can include up to six cosigners, and the applicants can split the installments. Seniors applying for a bridge loan must reside in or be moving into an approved facility.

Long-Term Care Insurance

Insurance providers such as Bankers Life and Genworth Financial offer long-term care insurance policies that can cover up to 100 percent of the cost of care in assisted living facilities and nursing homes. The price of these policies depends on a variety of factors, including the type and amount of coverage purchased and the insurance company chosen. The policyholder’s age and health are also factors that affect the cost of premiums.

Although each company has its own guidelines and policies in place, most won’t allow an individual to purchase a long-term care insurance policy after they’ve been diagnosed with a condition that may require long-term care, so it’s important for anyone considering these policies to plan in advance.
