I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Hallway carpets all over this facility are thin and stained. They desperately need to be replaced.

Pecan Point's rooms were very nice. Everybody was very helpful. Even some of the residents stopped and talked with us. They expressed how much they liked it there and how pleased they were to be there. They had activities, like morning Bible studies, and outdoor and sitting areas. The dining area was very nice, too.

Brookdale Willows Sherman is the one that my mom is kind of leaning toward, so we'll probably go that way. The rooms are very nice and have a better arrangement than other communities. The place is very clean, well maintained, and has activities, like morning Bible studies and some crafts. The dining area is very nice. I am very pleased with the area. The staff members are very nice, too.

Renaissance-Sherman was beautiful, and everybody I came in contact with was super nice. The place was clean and well-maintained. The apartments were also clean and set up nicely. I really liked it. They had a craft show going on when I was visiting, there were people playing cards and people walking in the courtyard. It was perfect.

Renaissance was very nice, and I would like to live there if I can afford it. They have a little pool where residents can go and exercise, a library, a visiting room, and a very nice cafeteria. I heard the food is good, and their little apartments are nice too. They have a living room area, kitchenette, and a spacious bedroom. They have a lot of dances sometimes, and games. I would recommend it to anyone.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Sherman

Medicaid in Texas

Texas Medicaid is a comprehensive health care program available to certain low-income residents for free or at a minimal cost. Medicaid provides the following essential health benefits:

  • Doctors visits, including wellness and preventive services
  • Emergency services and hospitalization
  • Laboratory services
  • Prescription drugs
  • Substance abuse and mental health services
  • Chronic disease management

These essential health benefits may be available to Sherman residents who receive Supplemental Security Income or are aged 65 and older, blind or disabled. To qualify for SSI or ABD Medicaid, individuals must meet the following income and asset requirements:

  • Earn no more than $771 per month (individual) or $1,057 (married couple applying jointly)
  • Have assets totalling no more than $2,000 (individual) or $3,000 (married couple), excluding items such as a primary home, vehicle and personal belongings

For those who meet the above criteria, Medicaid services are considered an entitlement, and participants may receive services while living at home or visiting an adult day care.

Additional Medicaid services may be available to Texas residents who need more extensive long-term care. These services may include:

  • Dental, vision and hearing care
  • Nursing home care
  • Home and community-based services
  • Care in a home for people with disabilities
  • Care in a hospital for individuals with a mental illness

To qualify for long-term care Medicaid, Texas residents must be at least 65 years old or have a disability lasting at least one year and require at least 30 days of continuous care. They must also meet the following income and asset criteria:

  • Earn no more than $2,313 per month (individual) or $4,626 (married couple)
  • Have assets totalling no more than $2,000 (individual) or $3,000 (married couple), excluding one’s primary vehicle, home and personal items

Couples can apply jointly or individually. If only one spouse needs benefits, individual income and asset limits apply. Additionally, the non-applicant can keep up to $126,420 in assets plus a minimum monthly maintenance needs allowance.

Apart from a small sum, which can be used for personal needs and health insurance premiums, long-term care Medicaid participants must use the majority of their income to pay for health-related services. Sherman residents can apply for Medicaid benefits online or by calling (877) 541-7905.

Although Texas Medicaid does not directly cover assisted living, certain seniors may qualify for services through the STAR+PLUS waiver.

STAR+PLUS Home and Community-Based Services Waiver

The STAR+PLUS Medicaid waiver was designed for seniors aged 65 and older and people with disabilities who have complex health care needs but would like to live outside of a nursing facility.

STAR+PLUS benefits and services include:

  • Managed care coordination
  • Assistance with activities of daily living
  • Respite care
  • Home modifications
  • Personal errands assistance
  • Assisted living
  • Nursing care
  • Home delivered meals
  • Therapies

Long-term care Medicaid participants who qualify for STAR+PLUS will receive an enrollment packet in the mail. In Grayson County, services are provided through Cigna-HealthSpring or UnitedHealthcare managed care plans. Recipients should select their desired health plan, complete the enrollment form and mail it back within 30 days of receipt.
