I visited this facility

Atria Cinco Ranch was very inviting. They were very informative and very friendly. I just saw their one-bedroom, and it was very clean and spacious. They also had all sorts of activities planned on their huge calendar. They had a dining room, a fitness room, a garden, and a courtyard. The facility was well-maintained, and everybody was very nice. Based on when we walked through the building, the food was not really good. Their menu was very detailed. The person who toured us said that the food is made from scratch, and based on COVID, they are getting their food delivered on each floor. One floor would be eating in the dining, while all the other floors would be eating in their rooms through their room service, and they rotate each floor, each day.

Atria Cinco Ranch was very nice, and they called back to check on me. My husband and I used to live in Cinco Ranch, so that was one of the reasons I liked the area. It was close to the church I used to attend and that was a big plus, too. It's a very nice and clean place. I liked the fact that they had quite a few activities. I'm looking at the brochure and they had a featured event. There was a Casino Royale part, which they said was like Bingo travelling, they had Oktoberfest party going on, and they had a Christmas tree decorating coming up later on. It was nice, and I appreciate the fact that they were having get-togethers, activities, and things. They were very friendly and knew what they were talking about. They had a lady executive director, and she's sent a letter that was very sweet and very touching. They had a printed literature that was very informative and I felt like it helped out a lot because obviously I brought it home and kept it in my folder of places I've been able to visit, so that when I can go out again, I'll be able to remember the ones I was at. It's probably September or so since I've been there, and I was able to go in. I remember it was easy to navigate, and they were very good.

I went to Atria Cinco Ranch. They were able to show me a room, we walked through the buildings, it was well kept, there were people in the common areas. We could speak to them, they spoke to us, and could just ask them how well they liked the place, and they seemed to be fairly happy. The staff seemed to be pretty knowledgeable of what was going on, and what their role was.

Oak Park Retirement Resort was the best of the three places I saw. The director was very good. Everybody was very helpful. They had a large theater that seated 150 people and a nice equipment room, and I met the instructor. It was a lot larger on the inside than I thought. The apartment was really nice, and the food was very good. I like that they had freedom dining there, and you can eat anytime you want. The staff was excellent. It didn't have much of a courtyard, but the building was very nice.

My mother moved into Sunrise of Cinco Ranch . Everything is fine, and I'm perfectly satisfied with it. The staff is wonderful, the dining area is nice, and she likes the food. She is enjoying the activities, but she doesn't play dominos. The room is nice, and they keep it clean. The parking is a little crowded.

Oak Park Retirement Resort was fantastic. I was very impressed. It's gorgeous and well kept. It was like living in a five-star hotel. The rooms were spacious. The person who gave me the tour was absolutely outstanding. It was just a bit above our budget. The menu seemed pretty good too.

My mother is at The Legacy at Falcon Point. They were very welcoming, and she's real happy with the food and the location of her apartment. So far, everything is going well. The activities look interesting to her. The apartment is much smaller than what she was used to, but it's bigger than several of the other communities we looked at. She seems pleased with it. The staff is very nice. They have a beauty shop, a movie theater, card rooms, game rooms, puzzle rooms, and craft rooms. I'm very happy with the doctor and the nurse practitioner who are going to come by. There's a healthcare person on the staff full time.

We visited The Legacy at Falcon Point; I had a stomachache when we went in there. I did not want to put my parents there. It looked like being in a hotel room and I didn’t like it. They had air-conditioning under the window that's like a hotel room. The place was clean, the dining room was nice and the facilities were nice, but it's just not for us. The lady that took us around was very nice. The place seems clean and sterile, but it's like a nursing home, so I didn't like it at all.

I visited this facility

I visited here, and I would tell anyone who is interested to please talk to the residents. In the three times I've been there, they have been dressed, I have been approached with "Can we help you?," and they told me their names, where they are and what they do. I would go there for the residents. When I went with the sales representative to look at the place, she was very helpful. She pointed out that they were having some sales, and that I really could have benefitted from those. I looked at their one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments. The two-bedroom I would recommend for people that are active. Because they're huge and far away from the dining room, but they're also close to the laundry facilities. I felt that the two-bedrooms for the price were amazing. They're close to 1,800 square feet with big walk-in closets, big bedroom, beautiful full kitchen, and amazing. I looked at their programs that they have on there. They're always taking trips and going somewhere. The people would happily pay for a meal. I had a meal with some of the residents and I love the people I was with. I love the place. The parking would have been very close to the two-bedroom apartments that I was looking at, just two feet away, and there seems to be a lot of parking. All of the staff members were knowledgeable. They knew about the sales even when they're not in sales, knew where I could find someone, and knew the names of all of the residents. I thought that was pretty amazing. They only allow dogs that are under 20 pounds but my dog is bigger. I was there on a special day, and they had a lot of assortments of food and what I ate was great. I had soup, salad, a wonderful dessert, and the pasta dish was very good. The place itself didn't have any smell, and everything was clean.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Katy

Medicaid in Texas

In Texas, the state’s Medicaid managed care program is called STAR+PLUS. It’s intended to provide individuals who are living with disabilities and seniors aged 65 and older with access to care that they may not otherwise be able to afford. The program covers the cost of case management, long-term care and additional services such as medical and dental care, physical therapy and transportation services.

The program is capped and only accepts a limited number of applicants each year. Seniors may be required to reapply to the program annually if they wish to continue their coverage. Due to the program’s limitations, there is typically a waiting list for participants.

To be accepted to STAR+PLUS, seniors must be 65 years of age or older and a full-time resident of Texas. They must also require daily support and long-term care and meet the financial eligibility requirements of the program, which include having an income that doesn’t exceed $750 per month and assets that don’t exceed $2,000. Additionally, senior applicants to this program must fall under one of the following categories:

  • Supplemental Security Income recipients
  • Those receiving Medicaid through a Social Security exclusion program
  • Participants in Medicaid’s Breast and Cervical Cancer program
  • Individuals who are eligible for the STAR+PLUS Home and Community-Based Services waiver
  • Those living in a nursing home and receiving Medicaid

To inquire about being added to the wait list for STAR+PLUS or for more information about eligibility and the application process, seniors can call 1-866-566-8989.

Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living

Community Care for the Aged and Disabled

Community Care for the Aged and Disabled (CCAD) is the state’s non-Medicaid program that provides assistance to seniors and those with disabilities. It is designed to help those who may not be eligible for Medicaid by providing access to a range of care options including assisted living and home care.

Applicants must be 65 years of age or older and require daily supportive services. The program requires applicants to have an income that doesn’t exceed $2,250 per month and assets that don’t exceed $5,000.

To apply or learn more about the application process, seniors can visit their local Aging and Disability Resource Center or call 1-855-937-2372.

Community First Choice

The Community First Choice (CFC) program is part of the state Medicaid program. It provides seniors 65 years and older with access to medical care, nurse visits and assisted living services. The program is intended for seniors who require a nursing level care but would prefer to continue living in their home or in an assisted living facility.

To be eligible, seniors must meet the financial requirements of the STAR+PLUS program and be 65 years of age or older. To apply, seniors can call 1-866-566-8989.

Optional State Supplement

Most government assistance programs, including Medicaid, only provide financial assistance with the cost of services provided in long-term care facilities. This leaves seniors paying out of pocket for room and board costs, which in some cases, isn’t possible. The optional state supplement (OSS) exists to provide seniors with financial support when such a scenario arises. The OSS is paid in cash to low-income seniors who reside in long-term care facilities and is intended to pay for the cost of room and board.

The OSS is only available to Supplemental Security Income recipients and can be applied for by calling the Texas Department of Health and Human Services at 1-855-937-2372.

Long-Term Care Insurance

A long-term care insurance policy typically must be purchased before the need for long-term care arises, but the policy covers the cost of long-term care in an approved assisted living or nursing home facility.

The cost of this insurance varies depending on the provider and the plan, as does the deductible. Most insurance providers also take into account the age and health condition of the policyholder when determining rates and eligibility.

Elderlife Bridge Loan

Elderlife Financial Services provides seniors with an alternative option when they’re unable to receive government assistance. Elderlife bridge loans can make it easier for seniors to pay for the cost of long-term care. Loans are paid directly to the applicant’s assisted living facility upon approval, and seniors may pay back the loan in installments. Loans come with flexible terms and low interest rates.

While eligibility depends on credit history and income, seniors who may not be able to obtain approval alone may apply with up to six cosigners, which may increase the likelihood of approval.
