For the money, The Parkview is a nice place. I saw the small room, and the next one, and they were nice. It's a cheaper place, so it's not the Taj Mahal, but it's nice for what it was. They have a room where they do exercises, they had an area downstairs with a grand piano, then I saw the dining area, which was very nice, and then he showed me the rooms, and he was very nice. I thought he was really good, the director.

Apple Grove was a nice option, but care was a little bit further along than we need. I liked it. Everything was locked down, so Alzheimer's patients can't get out. I liked the kitchen, and the residents could do some cooking if they wanted to do that. It was very nicely laid out. There was a large area for a living space, and they had a theater room. There were plenty of areas for them to walk outside, and they had a garden area. It's a very lovely facility.

Everything at The Parkview was favorable. The apartments were good. The staff members were very friendly, very competent, and very professional. The dining area looked good. I had lunch there and it was good. They had a library, a game room, and an exercise area. I like this community.

Town Village Audubon Park was professional, good, clean and well organized. The staff who assisted me was professional and good, too. The rooms were good, satisfactory and clean.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My dad has been a resident here. It is fine and he has been enjoying himself. The place is neat and clean. He gets three meals a day. Everything is good. I just wish they have a few more activities for the residents to do, but other than that, everything else is good. The staff members are very friendly with him and friendly with me whenever I come over. I like them a lot. My dad has an apartment. They have one- and two-bedroom apartments. They also have an exercise room, a game room, a TV room, and a garden or a patio area. They have a bus, but right now they don't have a driver. The food is good, but they need a little bit more variety. Everything is accessible to everybody and it is easy to get around.

My dad didn't like The Parkview because they had these elevators to get to the rooms. Plus, it was a little bit more expensive than other places as well. The director was very nice and friendly. She showed us a model of one of their studio apartments. The place was OK, but I didn't like the studio set up. It seemed like they have more activities for the residents to do. They have movie nights, every Friday they have happy hour, and they have a band or some type of music. They also go on outings to different places. The place was nice and clean.

Town Village Audubon Park's price was right and the facility was very nice and clean. They had everything we were looking for for a very good price. All the meals were included as well as 24-hour security. They provide a medical alert bracelet, exercise facility, and on-site physical therapist.

Apple Grove had a little bit more diversity in residents than other places, but they're very small, and they were very restrictive on accepting people. The rooms were a little bit better as far as the layout and since it was a smaller community, the staffing was much more immediate. The location was ideal for us, but they did not accept Mom. The dining area was great for the size of the facility, they had a good daily regimen of activities, and they had a great TV room.

I toured Town Village Audubon Park, and it was just a very nice facility. The people there were friendly, and I saw the residents interact with each other. It was a roomy place and not cramped. If my mother decided to go to a facility, that would have been the one I would choose for her. The young lady has followed up with me and I appreciated that.

Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living

Veterans Administration Aid and Attendance Pension program

The Veterans Administration Aid and Attendance Pension (A&A) program helps eligible low-income wartime veterans and their surviving spouses with the costs of assisted living, home care and skilled nursing home care. It’s for those who need daily assistance with various activities, such as medication management, bathing, dressing, transportation for errands and medical appointments and housekeeping.

A&A is an additional tax-free monetary benefit on top of a veteran’s basic monthly pension. Single veterans can receive as much as $1,794 a month, while surviving spouses receive up to $1,153 a month and married couples up to $2,127 a month. To qualify, a single veteran’s Maximum Annual Pension Rate (MAPR), set by congress, can’t exceed $22,577, and for married veterans it can’t exceed $26,766. For a more in-depth view of these calculations, please visit the veterans organization website

Veterans must have served at least 90 days on active duty and at least one of those days must have been during a wartime period. Veterans must also meet some of these conditions:

  • Be age 65 and older
  • Be totally or permanently disabled
  • Reside in a skilled nursing home
  • Receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)
  • Receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • Require the assistance of another person to perform ADLs

Widowed spouses must have been married to the veteran at the time of his or her death to be eligible.

Due to the many complexities involved with the obtaining the A&A benefit, it’s best to speak with a VA counselor who can guide you through the lengthy process and help you prepare and gather all the necessary forms

For more information, please call your local veterans office at (901) 222-4237.

Reverse Mortgage

reverse mortgage is a type of home equity loan that enables seniors to receive cash on their home’s value without selling it, and it’s often used to pay for assisted living. Qualified accommodations include single-family residences, manufactured homes, 2-4 unit properties, condominiums and townhouses.

Getting a reverse mortgage doesn’t affect Medicare of Social Security benefits, however, the payments you receive from a reverse mortgage must be spent within the same month you receive them. Any funds remaining in your bank account could be considered an asset and affect eligibility for government programs.

To be eligible for a reverse mortgage:

  • Seniors must be age 62 or older
  • The home must be owned by the applicant and have equity

It’s not necessary for the borrower to pay back the loan until the home is sold or otherwise vacated. Borrowers may refinance the reverse mortgage if their home significantly increases in value, and If seniors, or their heirs, decide to keep the home, the reverse mortgage can be repaid.

For more information on reverse mortgages, go to the National Reverse Mortgage Lenders Association to find a lender in Tennessee.
