I am/was a resident of this facility

I live in Richmond Place. It's a nice place, and the staff for the most part is friendly. The meals are not good though. My room is clean and comfortable. They have a group that does personal services, and we have quite a few activities.

I am/was a resident of this facility

I'm currently staying at Richmond Place in Lexington, and it's been very disappointing to me. They don't even come by and make sure you're still alive each day; that's what disappointed me. I feel like they should. They delivered meals when COVID was really bad, but it has been gone out here, so they quit delivering meals. That means no one will come to your door to make sure you're still living. They have a pull-cord by the commode, but what if you're in the living room and you can't get there? That's my concern, because my heart is bad, and I would never make it from the living room to the bathroom. That's why I'm leaving. They've stopped the meal delivery, so if you don't feel like you can't go to the cafeteria and eat, then you're going to have to do your own meal. I'm staying in a one-bedroom, it's a nice size, and it's bigger than most apartments that you rent. Someone comes in once a week to clean it, and it's not bad that way. They do the upkeep for you. My major concern is that they don't check in the morning to see if you're OK. The staff do what they need to do, and won't do any more. They have bingo and some other things during the week, but to me, I just feel like I walked into a group, and they didn't want anybody else to come into their group. That's how I feel since I've been here. They've got their little cliques and they stay with them. What they don't do also is let you know that the activities have three levels here. Some of them take place and they don't give you anything that tells you what day, what floor, and what time it will take place. They don't walk you around when you get there. They put you in a room and you're responsible to find all the stuff out, no one helps you. The pricing, I would say it's worth what they charge.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mom is very happy at Hartland Hills. We were going to put her in another facility, but then they had a COVID outbreak, so we had to go to Hartland Hills, and it's one of our choices. The facility is more open. They allowed us to visit and take care of her pills, her laundry, and things like that; otherwise, we would have to pay for it. They have lots of nice, elegant furniture, which appeals to the residents. They have lots of activities like cards, bingo, movie nights, exercises, and Wii Bowling. The meals are delivered for now. They are just very nice to their residents. The apartment she's in is very spacious and comfortable, too.

I visited this facility

Richmond Place came to visit me, and I was very impressed with how they were. I went to see them, and it's a wonderful place, far better than where I am. They had a full gamut of workers there. Everybody was kind and I was overwhelmed by how lovely everyone was. It's much different from where I am today. My room is going to be on the 2nd floor, and it will be a 1-bedroom. The whole place was lovely, very, very warm and welcoming. It was larger and warmer and more welcoming than where I am, and the people there were lovely. I was taken by the kindness and warmth of the young ladies that took me around. I can't say enough about it. I think they had a lot of activities there. I already had a sample of their dinners, and they were very, very nice. I truly am looking forward to the change. The place was just absolutely beautiful and had lots of amenities. They had everything. They had a wonderful and full staff. I was very impressed. The kindness of the young ladies was just unbelievable. They're sweet, kind, and warm, and the whole place felt like that.

I don't have any criticism of The Lafayette. I thought it was a very fine place. The staff, the dining room, the sales manager, and the location were excellent. It's nearby shopping centers, banks, eating places, and the university. They had a nice scope of daily activities.

I visited this facility

I went to Hartland Hills. They actually let me come in and look at their facility. It's an older facility, the food was good, but I would not move my mother in that facility. The administrator was very kind, she was very good, but I went into the rooms, the carpet was old, and the layout was old. They had a nice dining area, they had private rooms but it was average; it wasn't out of the ordinary or anything. There were other people that have lived there for years.

We're satisfied with Richmond Place so far. We have no problems with this community other than that it's expensive. My mother's room there is nice and it's big enough. I haven't been there since we moved her in because they won't let us inside at this time. The communication with the staff members could be a little better, but so far it's OK. They're just not too good about returning phone calls. My mom says the food is good. They have an activity area and a beauty salon. The appearance of the place is good, it was clean, and there were no smells or anything. In terms of the value for the money the price was awfully expensive.

I visited this facility

The people at Richmond Place were amazing and helpful. They had a really nice activity calendar with lots of options. Their cafeteria was very well kept and taken care of. They do a lot to accommodate food preferences. They showed us a studio and a one-bedroom that were in our price range. They didn't try to push past what we could afford. They showed us a furnished room and everything was displayed well. It was well kept and clean. The people's rooms were well taken care of. The admission people have been wonderful. They call and check every couple of days to see how my mother is doing or to see if she will be able to move in soon. They did the best to accommodate our needs and take care of us. They really showed us that they care. There was a game area, an open area where they could just hang out, there were board games, and an exercise room where they had classes regularly. It wasn't the nicest place that I visited, but it was pretty well taken care of, and the menu looked good.

Liberty Ridge is fine so far. They have no activities going on right now because of the virus, but they have activities prior. It's a nice place. My sister's apartment is pretty good, and it's the biggest place we could find for the price. The people are wonderful. She keeps saying how good the food is there, and she's very happy with the food. They've got a nice big dining room, activity rooms, a place to get your hair done like a salon, there are lots of stuff there, too. The staff is good.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Lexington

Medicaid in Kentucky

Medicaid is a government-funded health insurance program that provides eligible low-income Americans with free or low-cost health coverage. Senior citizens, pregnant women, people with disabilities and other groups may be eligible for Medicaid coverage. Each state operates its own Medicaid program based on federal guidelines, so coverage varies between states. Kentucky’s Medicaid program (KMP) covers a wide variety of medical services, including emergency services, doctor visits, dental services, home health care and private duty nursing.

Low-income seniors may be eligible for coverage through the KMP if they are U.S. nationals, U.S. citizens or permanent residents who live in Kentucky. Single seniors must have an annual pretax household income that is below $16,146, and the Medicaid income limit for couples is $21,892.

Seniors who earn more than Kentucky’s Medicaid income limit may be able to receive coverage through the state’s spend-down program. This program provides short-term medical assistance to people with high medical bills. Seniors can use their medical bills to bring down their excess income, and when they reach their spend-down limit, Medicaid kicks in. Seniors with a monthly income over $217 may be eligible for the spend-down program, and eligibility for this program is determined on a quarterly basis.

Seniors can use benefind, Kentucky’s online portal, to check their eligibility for Medicaid or apply for coverage. They can also apply in person at a local Department for Community Based Services (DCBS) office.

Seniors who have questions about KMP or need help applying for coverage, can call (855) 306-8959 to speak to a DCBS representative.

Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living

Optional State Supplementation

Low-income seniors in Lexington may qualify for assistance from the Optional State Supplementation (OSS) Program. This program provides an additional monthly payment to seniors who already receive federal Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments. The maximum monthly OSS payment is $520 for single seniors. The state of Kentucky treats couples as two individuals and each can receive up to $520. This cash assistance can be used to pay for room-and-board costs in assisted living facilities.

To receive assistance from the OSS program, seniors must be eligible for SSI payments. Seniors who have questions about this program can contact the Social Security Administration by calling (800) 772-1213. They can also visit a local Social Security office.

Veterans Affairs Aid and Attendance

Veterans or their surviving spouses who live in assisted living facilities may be eligible for the Veterans Affairs Aid and Attendance program. This program provides an additional monthly allowance to seniors who are eligible for a VA pension, which can be used to help pay for care in an assisted living facility.

The VA may add this allowance to a senior’s pension if they need help from another person to perform certain daily activities, such as getting dressed or adjusting prosthetic devices. The pension may also be paid to seniors who have very limited vision or are bedridden due to a disability.

Seniors can apply for this benefit in person at the Louisville Regional Office or submit a written request to the Pension Management Center (PMC) at the address below. Seniors must provide evidence to support their need for the increased pension amount, and the VA recommends including a doctor’s report.

Assisted Living Bridge Loan

Lexington seniors who need short-term help paying for assisted living care may want to consider an assisted living bridge loan. These loans can help seniors pay for care while they wait for a long-term source of funding, such as benefits approval or the proceeds of a home sale. Approval decisions are made quickly, and the funds are sent directly to the senior’s assisted living community. Good credit is required and a senior may have up to six cosigners  to help with approval and paying back the loan.

Seniors who want to apply for an assisted living bridge loan can complete an online application through Elderlife Financial or call (888) 228-4500. Seniors may need to provide information about their expected source of long-term funding.
