I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My father is now in Brookdale Wekiwa Springs. It's a great community and he loves it. They have activities for the residents like dancing and outings, and he really likes it. He says it's comfortable and feels like home, and that's amazing. The staff there is excellent, and they have a big area where they do aerobics and ballroom dancing. Everything is great; it's fantastic.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

The staff is friendly and helpful. There have been many changes for the better in the building. My loved one enjoys her time with her friends and the nurses she says are great. The Executive Director, Wellness Director and Sales were amazing at move in and were so helpful getting everything organized and ready for move in. I was impressed with the way my questions were answered timely and the way they accommodated me. I Would highly recommend them as they REALLY care about you!!

I visited this facility

We decided on Brookdale Wekiwa Springs but my mother never went there. The air conditioning was set at 65 degrees or off, and they said they couldn't fix it. I told them that since my mother can't go there we'll just have to rip up the contract, but they said no because it was signed contract. They're keeping the money, so at this point I'm not very happy with them. I don't want to give them a good recommendation because I think they're totally awful to keep our money, even when I gave them the 30-day notice immediately when I found out they couldn't solve the problem. Now they have the audacity to send my mother another bill for $1,400, so I'm really not happy. When you go in, the facility is really nice and has central air conditioning. The dining room and offices are very nice, but then you go to the rooms and it's still central air conditioning. I saw a shared room where the people who were already there were not on the side where the air conditioning was. It looked like they had a lot of different things to do. They were supposed to take my mom on a Friday when she was getting out of rehab. They called and said they couldn't take her until Monday, so she had to stay in rehab for another two days over the weekend. My question was, why didn't they have a place ready on Friday? It's a beautiful place, but it was a scam.

I Visited This Community

I visited Wellsprings Residence. It was a small, nice, and clean place. There were comfortable, hospital-sized rooms. They had a small TV room, a small dining room, and a small community room.

Care Cost Comparison

Costs for senior care are based on the type of service, the number of direct service hours and the location. In Apopka, nursing home care in a semiprivate room costs more than double what assisted living costs, while homemaker services and a home health aide are also more expensive than assisted living.

When considering the total monthly cost of senior care it’s important to factor in daily living costs such as rent, food and home maintenance that are usually included with residential care services for seniors.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Apopka

Medicaid in Florida

Medicaid is a nationwide health insurance program that provides low-income, low-asset Americans with limited access to services and supports that promote health and wellness. Medicaid is a joint program between the federal and state governments, and in Florida, the Agency for Health Care Administration, a branch of the Florida Department of Children and Families, administers Medicaid.

Florida seniors aged 65 and older must meet strict income and asset criteria to qualify for Medicaid coverage. Individual seniors can earn no more than $2,313 a month and own no more than $2,000 in countable assets, while couples applying together can earn no more than $4,626 per month and own no more than $3,000 in countable assets.

Under Medicaid rules, countable assets include cash, bonds and investment real estate, while income from all sources includes wages, pension, stock dividends and alimony. Some assets are excluded, such as personal effects, furniture, one vehicle and a principal residence valued at $585,000 or less.

Like all states except California, Florida has a five-year Medicaid asset look-back period. Seniors who apply for Medicaid may be subject to penalties on any assets they transferred or gifted during the 60-month period prior to their Medicaid application. Medicaid look-back penalties are assigned based on a calculation that divides the total value of the uncompensated transfers divided by the average monthly cost of a private-pay nursing home to determine the Medicaid ineligibility period.

Seniors in Florida who meet the criteria for Medicaid coverage and have needs that would normally require nursing home placement may be eligible for additional assistance through the Florida Statewide Medicaid Managed Care, Long-Term Care Program, or SMMC LTC.

The LTC program is designed to reduce statewide nursing home admission rates by providing seniors with long-term care services in their homes, the community or an assisted living facility. These services are distributed according to the seniors’ long-term care plan and may include:

  • Attendant care and adult day care
  • Homemaker
  • Medication administration and management
  • Personal care
  • Skilled nursing
  • Respite care
  • Transportation
  • Physical, speech and occupational therapy

To learn more about Medicaid and the Florida Statewide Medicaid Managed Care and Long Term Care Program, call the Agency for Health Care Administration at (877) 711-3662 or the Florida Elder Helpline at (800) 963-5337.

OSS provides money for the room-and-board portion of residential care, including assisted living for seniors who are unable to live on their own due to a disability or age-related cognitive or physical deterioration.

Eligible seniors may receive a maximum SSI top-up of $78.40 for an individual applicant and $156.80 for a couple.

Veterans Aid and Attendance Program

Veterans who are currently receiving a regular (non-disability) VA pension and require assistance from another person to perform daily tasks may be eligible for additional funding through the Aid and Attendance program. To qualify, applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Require assistance daily to bathe, dress, eat, toilet or manage a prosthetic device
  • Be bedridden due to a disability or chronic illness
  • Have corrected vision that tests at 5/200 or worse in both eyes
  • Currently live in a nursing home to receive support with physical or mental limitations
  • Have a visual field measuring 5 or fewer degrees due to concentric contraction

Veterans Housebound Allowance

Veterans who have a VA disability level of 100 percent and are largely confined to their principal residence as a result of a permanent disability may qualify for an increased monthly pension through the Veterans Housebound Allowance. The disability does not need to be related to military service.

Note that Veterans may receive either the Aid and Attendance benefit or the Housebound Allowance, even if they meet the criteria for both programs.
