I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother moved into The Chateau At Harveston, and it is looking pretty good right now. I helped her move in and it looked good. I am seeing her weekly, and everything is looking good right now. They have activities, but she's not participating in any of those yet. We are trying to get her acclimated, and she's had some leg pains. I think it is sciatica, so we are trying to help her out with things, and getting her comfortable before she participates. The meals have been decent, they have shrimp, chicken, beef, pork, and some pretty good vegetables. The staff seems to be very friendly or helpful. I seem to like the food a little bit better than my mom does. They have an exercise room, a crafts room, and the place is in an area by Harveston lake, so you can utilize that. I haven't been able to get my mom out there yet. They have a ballroom where you eat, a courtyard, and a place where they watch movies. They have transportation to doctor's appointments, and out to different excursions.

The Chateau at Harveston was very nice. The rooms were very nice, and better than the other ones. They’re very spacious and very clean. Harveston was the best of everything we looked at. The staff was very nice. The dining area was beautiful. I saw a TV room. They were amazing, and the location was very nice for a private community.

Everything about my tour at Vineyard Ranch at Temecula was excellent. Everything is clean, the people were friendly and they met all of the residents' needs. The price was very affordable comparably, the location was excellent, the community was really very nice, and the food was wonderful. And the staff who accommodated us during the tour was great. She answered all our questions, she gave guidance and education on the process and system, and the comparison between assisted living and memory care. They have different activities like exercise, doctors would come in, they have education programs, they drive folks to different activities, and they hold mass there. The menu was great, it rotated and they have special accommodations. There was also a café that was open 24/7.

Everything about The Chateau At Harveston is very nice. Everything is very clean, the people are friendly and the place smells good. And the look of the community is updated. The staff members are all very caring and friendly. I have eaten there many times, the food is very good and you have many choices. We've played bingo, they have music, cards, and my stepmother goes on walks with other residents. There's usually something going on all the time. The food doesn't have a lot of seasonings but they can't do that for older people. They keep everything in the place nice. We also like their rooms better than other senior places we've visited.

I like Atria Park of Vintage Hills. My mother's room is always kept clean. They have a library, a beauty salon, and ice cream parlor; they have pretty much everything. The staff is lovely, and the community is beautiful. My mother is well-fed and well taken care of. She likes her environment and has lots of activities every day.

Everything looked clean and I thought The Chateau at Harveston might be a better spot, because of the fact they take travelers that come in from their parent company. They can stay a week or two if they're traveling. All I looked at was a studio, which included a combination kitchen and bedroom, and it was fine, but it was too much money for me and it was pretty small.

Everything at Atria Park of Vintage Hills seemed great. I really liked the decor, which was obviously upper scale, with a little bit old English style. They have an ice cream parlor which is above and beyond. I love ice cream and my mom really loves ice cream too. The only downfall is that their annual increase is very high. Their annual increase is 5 to 9%, and everybody else is around 3 to 5%. The person who showed me around was very knowledgeable and very nice.

I did not care for Atria. The place itself was nice, and the apartments were nice, but the independent was a separate building from the assisted living. I didn't get a good feeling there. They seemed disorganized. The people who I talked to were not happy. The restaurant was not wonderful, and the service was not good. They didn't have as many amenities as other places. They give you a continental breakfast, a small lunch, and a dinner. There was no movie theater.

Atria Park of Vintage Hills is nice. The structure is fairly new and the assisted living residents have a bit more freedom. The memory care just seemed chaotic to me. They have a pretty nice swimming pool. I don't think they don't have enough physical activity. They do go out on tours.

Care Cost Comparison

Care costs for seniors can vary depending on such factors as the type of care required and the amount of hours needed to deliver services. Monthly assisted living costs are less than half of the expense of nursing homes in Temecula, while in-home care, such as home health aides and homemaker services, are moderately more expensive than assisted living. In-home care does not include the budget for home upkeep, while residential care often includes the cost of some utilities and room and board. Medicaid in California

The California Medicaid program is called Medi-Cal. It pays for a myriad of services for low-income residents of California, including physical and mental health care, prescription assistance, maternal care and nursing home care. Medi-Cal is a large program with multiple smaller programs, which have divisions that include care for children, families, the disabled and the elderly.

To be eligible, individuals who are blind, disabled or over 65 years old must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or legal alien

Medi-Cal has several HCBS waiver programs that provide nursing home care in facilities and private homes. The Assisted Living Waiver (ALW) Program provides nursing home level care in assisted living facilities for eligible seniors. It only covers the cost of care; participants must pay for room-and-board expenses.

To be eligible for ALW, applicants must:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Need a nursing facility level of care but have the mobility to function and reside safely in an assisted living residence
  • Have a monthly income of no more than $1,242 (individual) or $1,682  (couple)
  • Have countable assets that do not exceed $2,000 (individual) or $3,000 (couple) — Personal items, a primary home and a vehicle are exempt from this requirement

The ALW is only available in assisted living facilities that participate in the program, and there may be a waiting list at individual locations. Contact the Riverside County Office on Aging at (800) 510-2020 or visit the California Department of Health Care Services website for more information, to apply or for a list of participating facilities.
