If an establishment offers special programs for individuals with Alzheimer’s they must also offer a range of services from appointing a representative to ensuring the continued safety of the resident. What Training is Required for Assisted Living and Shared Housing Establishment Staff?
All personnel must have the proper experience for the job to which they are assigned. They must also undergo ongoing in-service training to ensure they have the necessary skills to perform job duties.
All staff members working in Alzheimer’s care must receive additional training as well as a 4 hour dementia-specific orientation. The first 16 hours of direct care on-the-job-training must be supervised, and must cover encouraging independence while providing assistance with ADLs (activities of daily living), evacuation procedures, creating an environment that minimizes challenging behavior, resident rights, and techniques for successful communication. This position also requires 12 hours of in-service education each year specific to Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Is an Assessment Required Before Move-In?
A physician’s assessment is to be completed before moving into the establishment, and a re-evaluation must be performed each year. Currently there is no required form, but the individual’s physical, cognitive, and psychosocial conditions should be evaluated and documented. Each establishment may develop their own evaluation tools as well as forms of documentation as long as it addresses the resident’s condition and incorporates the physician’s assessment.
What Care is Available in Assisted Living and Shared Housing Establishments?
- Assistance with ADLs.
- General supervision.
Residents are allowed to contract 3rd party home health agencies that are unrelated to the shared housing establishment to assist with special needs.
How is Medication Managed?
All medication must be self-administered, but facility staff may give reminders and monitor residents to make sure they follow directions on the containers. Medicine administration can be provided by licensed personnel if necessary.
What are the Bathroom Requirements for Assisted Living and Shared Housing Establishments?
Assisted living units will have bathrooms that allow for privacy while also providing an operational sink, toilet, mirror, ventilation, and assistive devices. At least 1 tub or shower must be provided for every 6 residents, and 1 toilet and sink for every 4.
What are the Move-In or Move-Out Requirements?
Assisted living/shared housing establishments can only admit residents whose needs can be met by the facility, and they may not admit or retain residents who:
- Possessing serious mental or emotional problems.
- Need constant nursing care.
- Require total assistance with 2 or more ADLs.
Is Assisted Living Covered by Medicaid in the State of Illinois?
Illinois offers a Supportive Living Program that operates under a 1915(c) Home and Community-Based Services Medicaid waiver, authorizing support for 11,500 people per year through Supportive Living Facilities (SLFs). SLFs are certified and inspected by the Department of Healthcare and Family Services.
