What Training is Required for Assisted Living Facility Staff?
Within the first 7 days of employment, all staff, as well as contracted personnel, must complete orientation and training, including building and safety emergency measures, appropriate response to emergencies, abuse and neglect reporting, incident reporting, sanitation and food safety, resident health and related problems, and resident’s rights.
Within the first 30 days an employee must also complete training on medication assistance or monitoring, communicable diseases, and dementia and cognitive impairment.
Additional training is required for staff working in Alzheimer’s special care, including training in policies, treatment of dementia, stages of Alzheimer’s disease, behavior management, use of physical restraints and wandering, communication skills, activity programming, individual-centered care, assessments, and creating individual support plans. 2 hours of ongoing in-service training is required every quarter.
Is an Assessment Required Before Move-In?
Each resident must undergo an initial evaluation before admission into the facility.
What Care is Available in an Assisted Living Facility?
Level I facilities provide:
- Assistance with ADLs
- 24-hour staff supervision.
- 24-hour assistance with emergency care.
- Assistance with social and recreational activities.
- Transportation assistance.
- Linen service.
- 3-meals a day.
- Medication assistance.
Home health services may be provided by a certified agency on a short-term basis in a Level I facility.
Level II facilities provide assistance to help with certain routines, ADLs, and assistance with medication in accordance with the state’s Nurse Practice Act. Health needs are assessed and completed by registered nurses.
How is Medication Managed?
Level I facility staff can provide assistance to residents who are able to self-administer medication. In Level II facilities, licensed nurses may administer medication.

Each apartment or unit must have a complete bathroom.
What are the Move-In or Move-Out Requirements?
Assisted Living Facilities can only admit residents whose needs can be met by the facility, and Level I facilities may not admit or retain residents who:
- Require 24-hour nursing services.
- Are bedridden.
- Are a danger to other residents, themselves, or the staff, or if they engage in criminal activities.
Level II facilities may not provide service to residents that meet any of the requirements above or if they have a temporary (less than 14 days) or terminal condition unless it is agreed on by a physician or advanced practice nurse that the resident’s needs can be met safely.
Is an Assisted Living Facility Covered by Medicaid in the State of Arkansas?
Yes. The Medicaid state plan service reimburses for personal care services. For individuals medically eligible for nursing home care, a Level II Assisted Living Facility may provide care and services.
