We visited the Sommerset Neighborhood. It was nice and very clean. The staff was very friendly and informative. They had a lot of information. The rooms were very clean. Everything seemed very organized. While we were there we saw a staff member responding to a resident in need, and they were very quick. They were really on the spot to a buzzer. That was super impressive because they didn't seem to notice that we were there. They also showed their memory care unit, and it was a nice, comforting place. It was good. The rooms were a little bit smaller, but the building was very nice.

My husband and I will be moving into Village on the Park - Oklahoma City. They're very friendly, welcoming, and I think it will be a successful living condition for us. The staff was very nice. The client representative was excellent, and the director was very friendly and considerate of what we might need. The apartment was just under 300 square feet, so for two people it's small, but it's livable. We're moving into independent living, but my husband will be moving into assisted living when that's available. They have a library, courtyards, a nice park across the street, a small exercise room, and an exercise activity three days a week. There's a canasta group that they're starting, which I love because I play canasta. Three meals a day for both of us will be advantageous, and a medical facility is available for us as needed. Housekeeping once a week is included, which includes washing the sheets. I would need to do the rest of the laundry, but they have laundry facilities there for no charge. They have eight or ten washers and dryers; you just go and help yourself. I met three staff members, and they were very nice, competent, and very knowledgeable.

My dad was at Sommerset until March 2020. He was in the assisted living before being moved to memory care. I would want my dad to go to Sommerset again if need be..Everyone even including the handyman were always eager and pleasant to meet any of my dads needs or our requests. My dad was comfortable there. I would and do recommend this facility.

We have a relative that is being referred to the memory care unit. We toured the memory care unit at the mansion. It smelled bad the moment the door was opened. The floors, walls and rooms were filthy with damages and filth on walls and floors. The meal was presented in a very unappetizing fashion. The staff looked unkept and unprofessional. For the amount these patients pay for their care, there is no excuse for the lack of dignity offered to them. Our hearts are heavy after viewing what these elders are enduring.

My brother is now at Legend at Rivendell. It is very impressive. The staff is very friendly. I know all of them. They have my number and they text me all the time. They send me pictures of my brother and tell me how he is doing. I couldn't have found a better place. They have different activities set up. They also have things set up where they go places once a week. They have in-house doctors and an in-house nursing staff. It is just a really good place. It is fully staffed too. The dining area is like a four-star restaurant. The place doesn't even remind you of a facility, and my brother has an apartment with a living room and a bedroom. They do a lot of activities. The activities director is a young guy who is very spirited. He really gets involved with the people.

The rooms that I saw there were very nice, the place itself is also very nice, and it has a pool. Their grounds ae very nice and there's a pond that you can go fishing on if you want to. It's also located in a nice part of town. They also have activities like outings, games like bingo, and whatnot. I only met one lady. She was a resident who also lived there, but she was also showing people the apartments. It was a toss up between this place and the one I'm currently in. The thing that got me to pick the other one was the size of the room and the location. The layout was nice and the facilities were nice. Each apartment had a storage facility where the residents can put their Christmas decorations or seasonal stuff.

My mother moved into the Mansion at Waterford. It was hard getting started, but it's getting better day by day. She likes having access to more activities. I think she's settling in nicely, although there were some rough edges at first. The room is wonderful, and they totally renovated it to her liking before she moved in there. It's very bright and cheerful. They have more than enough activities for her, including transportation to and from Walmart, and to her doctors' appointments.

I visited Epworth Villa's assisted living. There were a lot of people around doing things independently compared to long-term care. I have known about them for a long time because it's part of the Methodist church initiative for senior-care. The community was fine. It was lunchtime and they had residents eating in the various facilities. The residents seemed actively engaged in visiting with each other and doing stuff. The place looked good, but the individual rooms where the residents reside were very small. They have a lot of activities in the community; they also take the residents out. I met a friend there who was getting ready to go out on a tour that was offered to them. Other than assisted living, they also have other services available. It had very good outward curb appeal and looked very nice.

Hefner Mansions has been really good. They were very helpful in getting my mother moved in, and she is having a wonderful time. They have a lot of activities that keep her occupied and happy. She's got a better attitude now that she has moved in to there. She's played some card games, they have exercises, yoga, and entertainment. The food is good, and she hasn't had any complaints about it. They have a community room, game room, and church services. She has a full-size stove in her kitchen.

Created in 1968, Medicaid is a jointly funded state and federal health care insurance program for low-income Americans. Called SoonerCare in Oklahoma, it is administered by the state’s Department of Human Services. While Soonercare covers many of the costs associated with long-term care, other options, including assisted living, are available through the state’s home and community-based waivers. These are explained in more detail below. Medicaid is available to Oklahoma residents and U.S. citizens who have annual incomes of $26,244 or less and total assets of $2,000 or less. Medicaid counts all possible forms of income, and these include but are not limited to pensions, wages, Social Security Insurance, stock dividends and IRA withdrawals. Countable assets consist of bank accounts, stocks, bonds, investments, cash and real estate, aside from a primary residence occupied by either the applicant or spouse. Further exemptions include burial costs, an automobile, personal belongings and household furniture. Individuals whose incomes exceed the limitations may be eligible to establish a Qualified Income Trust. According to the American Council on Aging, strict rules determine the governing of Income Only Trusts. Funds can only be spent on expenses related to long-term care, and any remaining balance after the recipient’s passing must be paid to the state of Oklahoma. To learn more about SoonerCare in Oklahoma, call the helpline at (800) 987-7767 or complete the online application. ADvantage Waiver Program One of two home and community-based waivers available for seniors in Oklahoma City, the ADvantage Waiver Program serves those who qualify for SoonerCare, are 65 or older and are determined to be disabled by the Social Security Administration. Further, the nursing staff of the Aging Services Division must determine that applicants need a nursing facility level of care. Recipients of the waiver are entitled to many services that enable them to live in their home or a family member’s home. These services include skilled nursing, therapies, adult day care, home-delivered meals and environmental modifications. Those who wish to apply or learn more should call the Oklahoma Health Care Authority at (405) 522-7300. Medically Fragile Waiver Seniors under 65 who are frail and need a skilled nursing level of care may be eligible for Oklahoma’s Medically Fragile Waiver. Included services are very similar to those provided under the ADvantage Waiver, including meals, environmental modifications and skilled nursing, and applicants must also be eligible for Medicaid. Interested individuals can apply online or receive assistance by calling (888) 287-2443 or emailing [email protected].
PACE
Oklahoma City is one of three cities in Oklahoma that offers the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly services through the Valir PACE center. PACE is considered an extension of Medicaid benefits, but those who do not qualify for Medicaid can still receive PACE services by paying privately. People who are 55 and older and need nursing-level care receive a variety of supports, including adult day care, physical and occupational therapy, home care and hospice care. Apply online at MySoonerCare.org or contact Nicole Collins at (405) 522-7154. Veterans Aid and Attendance and Housebound Benefits
Veterans who need assistance with activities of daily living or who are housebound may be eligible for Aid and Attendance and Housebound Benefits. These are VVA pension top-ups, and the funds may be used at the recipient’s discretion to pay for care in the setting of their choice. Those seeking Aid and Attendance benefits must require assistance with some or all of these ADL: bathing, dressing, grooming, eating or coping with the hazards of day-to-day living. Housebound benefits are available to those who, aside from any prescribed treatment for their condition, are bedridden. Learn more at your local Mobile Veterans Administration Office at (251) 574-8578 or by calling the VA Pension Center serving the Oklahoma City area at (608) 758-9300.
Oklahoma City’s Parks and Recreation Department organizes the many complimentary senior programs offered by two of the city’s senior centers. Those 55 and older who are interested in pursuing creative arts such as woodcarving and watercolor and those looking for physical activities, games and performance arts can find them at the senior centers. Luncheons and special events are also available. Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation Senior Programs
